British Federal has recently supplied a DW100/6 100 kVA drum forming and welding machine as part of a £300,000 order from the Shanwei Group, a chemical adhesive product manufacturer in Zhuhai, PR China.

The machine is equipped with a swing arm 'touch pad' and MP3HPS-DW welding controls and is able to weld 210 litre drums at up to 720 units per hour.

The length of the drums being made is 914 mm with an inner diameter of 571 mm using 1.0 mm thick material.

The specification of Parker Pneumatic control systems results from the ability of the company's specialist Systems Design Department to completely redesign and reduce the size of the machines' existing control panel - at lower cost and without compromising quality - in order that it could be relocated within the framework of the existing machine.

'The original control panel was fixed to the side of the machine and, although the main body of the machine was relatively narrow, the control panel increased the width considerably - but only in this one area', says Nigel Morris, British Federal's Product Manager for specialised products.

'Parker Pneumatic gave us a control panel around 50% smaller than the previous panel - which is now located within the existing framework and reduces the overall size of the machine.' The control panel for the system - measuring 570 mm by 570 mm by 150 mm - consists of a 'U' section fabricated steel plate onto the underside of which all of the Parker Pneumatic control equipment is surface mounted.

The components, piping and fittings are therefore not visible externally.

This pneumatic equipment includes an air preparation set with lock out valve, filter and lubricator; pressure regulators and pressure gauges; 4/3 rotary lever valves; 5/2 ISO2 solenoid spring spool valves; and adjustable pressure switches.

The panel controls a number of the drum forming and welding machine's pneumatic cylinders: the lower weld head cylinder, upper and lower knurl pressure cylinders, and hour glass roll cylinders are controlled by three 4/3 rotary lever valves; and the lower ratchet and upper ratchet cylinders by two 5/2 ISO2 solenoid spring spool valves.

Six pressure regulators are used to reduce the pressure on either the front or rear of the cylinder depending on its application, with the opposing end of the cylinder being supplied by unregulated mains air.

Three pressure switches are used to monitor the air pressure at points on the machine - the mains air inlet, the rear of the lower weld head cylinder, and the rear of the knurl pressure cylinders.

All air connections apart from the mains supply are made in the side wall of the mounting plate

Standard and low temperature variants, hand lever with built-in catch for reliable position retention, variants designed for a special NO (normally open) mobile solenoid valve, and several varieties of special NC solenoid valves, make the Viking range an excellent choice in mobile applications.

Sales in the European market for pneumatic equipment continue to show potential for growth, expected to rise from $3.49 billion in 2000 to $4.56 billion in 2006

In the short term, the strength of the European economy is expected to fuel demand. However, according to a new study by Frost and Sullivan, the international marketing consulting company, mounting price pressures and the likely moderation of European economic growth in the medium term mean that suppliers of pneumatic equipment must focus their competitive strategies to maintain margins.

Suppliers to the European market for pneumatic equipment compete in an intensely competitive environment.

Pneumatic equipment is combined for use in pneumatic systems.

Individual product areas are therefore strongly interrelated, and growth across the market tends to be fairly uniform.

The varying intensity of price competition is largely responsible for differing rates of revenue growth in individual product markets.

Growth in this market for valves, accounting for the largest share of sales across all product markets, is expected to be driven by favourable economic conditions, by the continuing popularity of solenoid valves, and by the rising availability and use of intelligent valves.

Meanwhile, similarities can be drawn between the market for filter regulator lubricators (FRLs) and the market for cylinders.

In both product areas, revenue growth is being impacted by falling prices.

Camozzi has introduced into its product portfolio a lockable safety ball valve for use as an on-off valve for pneumatic systems

In the off position, downstream air is exhausted through a vent hole in the valve body, eliminating the danger of pressurised air remaining in the system after shut-off. The locking feature allows maintenance or setting activities be carried out safely on the system and prevents the air supply being reactivated inadvertently.

The valve body is constructed of nickel-plated brass and the range will be available in port sizes of ¼', 3/8', ½' and 1'.

Power take off is a truck industry term for an auxiliary gearbox which is driven through the vehicle's main transmission to provide power to drive hydraulic pumps, fan blowers and other ancillary equipment.

Selection and deselection of the PTO function is a safety critical operation with the potential to cause injury to the operator and passers-by, or to cause expensive damage to the PTO or the main transmission system.

Perfect manual interface with the control system is essential to achieve a safe interlock, eliminating the possibility of human error.

A common cause of damage and potential injury identified by Parker Pneumatic relates to PTO engagement, via a latching type of electrical switch, when the system remains operational until manually released.

Deselection of the interlock via the release of a park brake or speed sensing unit selects a disengaged status for the PTO.

If the operator or driver is unaware of this deselection, the next time the park brake is applied or speed is reduced, the PTO will try to engage, causing damage to the PTO or main transmission and possibly creating a potential hazard for passers-by.

From previous experience of working with Festo we knew these criteria would be met.' GESL is an international engineering systems developer that undertakes feasibility studies, systems design and manufacture, installation, commissioning and technical support throughout the world.

Customers include nuclear, industrial and pharmaceutical concerns.

The company recently received a SMART award from the UK Department of Trade and Industry.

Typically, to guarantee that at least the stated minimum weight of product is dispensed to the container, most systems overfill by a small percentage.

Over time, this is a costly excess, and one which can be minimised by Festo's more accurate and controllable filling process.

The Festo solution uses a pump -style piston assembly which first draws product from a hopper or header tank, switches a valve to redirect the flow path, then dispenses the product through nozzles into containers on a process line.

However, the SPC controller can halt the actuating cylinders at any position along their stoke to eliminate the need for manual compensatory adjustment.

In addition, the SPC unit under PC or PLC control can go one stage further.

It can integrate feedback from an in-line weighing system to make automatic on-the-fly dispensing adjustments.

Each head can be independently driven and controlled to ensure a perfect fill with negligible wastage every time.

Now the target weight is constant with small variations in the volume dispensed automatically compensating for the process variables.

Parker Pneumatic and Meritor HVS Limited, suppliers of brake and suspension systems to heavy goods vehicle and trailer manufacturers, have jointly developed a new dock height control system for vehicle trailers utilising air suspension - marketed as the Meritor Levelride II. The new Levelride II simplifies loading and unloading by allowing trailer deck height to be adjusted manually to the height of the loading bay, enabling easy access for handling equipment.

The Levelride II is installed in line between the levelling valve - which controls the trailer suspension height during normal operation - and the air springs.

Initial operation of the unit disconnects the level valve from the air springs enabling manual control of the suspension height.

Control of the system is by simple push-pull operation: push to raise the trailer height; and pull to lower.

Reset to normal ride height is achieved manually by means of a central reset button or automatically.

Operating the reset returns control of the trailer suspension to the levelling valve.

If the driver forgets to reset the system, damage can occur to shock absorbers and attachments, check straps and air springs.

In extreme cases, the welds attaching the air suspension to the chassis can be damaged.

Even if there is no immediate failure, all of these components in the air suspension system will have their service lives seriously shortened as a result of the driver's momentary lapse.

The Levelride II system ensures that never again will an absent-minded moment by the driver result in damaged air suspension and repair bills which can easily amount to œ1000.

First application of the vehicle brake system - no matter how light - will send an electrical signal to the Levelride II and it will automatically reset the suspension to normal ride height.

The Levelride II is constructed in weight saving corrosion free plastic to IP68 standard and proof against water, road dirt, steam cleaning, etc.

Designed for ease of installation on new or existing vehicles, Levelride II features 10 mm quick-connect push-in pneumatic fittings and two metres of electrical cable, together with detailed installation instructions and all necessary fasteners.
